Don’t send me your CV, send me your Steam ID.

A PlayStation Network ID or even a XBOX Live account will do as well, maybe even a Battle.net account.

I can train someone to work in the sales team at Multiplay, I can mentor them in sales process methodologies and account mapping I can even make sure that they have some incredibly talented engineers to provide the technical expertise of the ins and outs of our product, but I can’t train someone to be passionate about what we do, which is run the infrastructure which powers multiplayer games as the world’s leading game server hosting specialists.

Having a salesperson who can engage with a game developer and show passion for what our clients games is important but it goes much deeper than that at Multiplay. If you’re not a gamer it’s not just that you won’t understand what we do as a company but you will struggle to integrate with the team. At lunch time at our office there is very little discussion about what everyone is going to eat and far more conversation about what everyone is going to play at lunch time. It is commonplace to see groups of people trying to smash the top score on Robot Recall on the Oculus Rift, or roars of laughter as our head of finance scores a birdie on a multiplayer match of Golf with Friends. These lunch time game sessions have become the best way of creating an effective team environment. Significantly more effective than any number of offsite team building events ever could. Anyone that joins Multiplay without getting involved in the gaming culture often take much longer to build internal relationships.

Computer games is now one of the fastest growth industries in the world which is worth more than the Film and Music industry combined. With the explosive growth of mobile and tablet games there are now more gamers than ever before so finding someone who likes playing games is not a challenge Finding someone who is truly passionate about games on the other hand is. That’s where the Steam ID comes in. A couple of seconds looking at a candidates Steam ID will tell me all I need to know about someone’s gaming habits.

If a candidate’s gamer profile shows them having played a couple of hours of a few major AAA titles then maybe they are not quite the right fit for Multiplay, but if it shows a couple of hundred hours of playtime across a wide variety of games from the big AAA titles to some random early access indie games then I want to talk to them. I can give them an amazing career path where they can take that passion for games and help the next generation of games developers get their games launched flawlessly.

So if you are a salesperson or if you know a sales person that stays up until the small hours to play the latest DLC or is booking a week off to play Destiny 2 get in touch by sending your Steam ID to matthew.morris@multiplay.co.uk

If you are a sales leader, how do you identify passionate people when hiring? Let me know in the comments.
